Because of Calvary,
John Janney
Psalm 42:7 (ESV)
Deep calls to deep
at the roar of your waterfalls;
all your breakers and your waves
have gone over me.
“Plunged into an ocean of misery where my feet do not touch bottom, I cry out, O God. Lord, hear my cry. For it is to vindicate Your image and likeness that You have implanted within us that I cry out to You. I cry, because You cannot leave me disfigured by the misery of my present state. It is because of my iniquity that Your hand is heavy upon me. Yet Your hand is just as restrained in judgment. For in the sea, in this depth, on this earth, You allow nothing to happen that will drive us to despair.
“O my God….the deep of my profound misery calls to the deep of Your infinite mercy. I look around in vain for any hope and realize that only You can give the solid assurance and the support that I need. There can be no existence without You. I find that there is only one reality, and that is that You are always dependable…. I search everywhere, in all the wide realms of the world, in all that is inside me, as well as all that is outside me, but they only highlight the reality that I need You.” [Bernard of Clairvaux, The Love of God abridged, edited, and introduced by James M. Houston,.(Portland, OR: Multnomah Press, 1983), p. 107-108]
