The effectual sacrifice!
Dear Friends,
Do you love the old hymns? I do. Instead of simply trying to get people worked up, they present glorious truth and by that truth produce godly emotions. Today’s devotional, if you will take the time to meditate on it, is a wonderful example. God bless you.
Because of Calvary,
John Janney
John 19:30 (ESV)
When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, “It is finished,” and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.
“Not all the blood of beasts
On Jewish altars slain,
Could give the guilty conscience peace,
Or wash away its stain.
But Christ, the Heavenly Lamb,
Took all our guilt away!
A sacrifice of nobler name
And richer blood than they.
My faith would lay her hand
On that dear head of Thine,
While like a penitent I stand,
And there confess my sin.
My soul looks back to see
The burden Thou didst bear,
When hanging on the accursed tree,
And knows her guilt was there.
Believing, we rejoice
To see the curse removed;
We bless the Lamb with cheerful voice,
And sing His bleeding love.”
